Town Hall : Sanctuary Cities & Bible Cities of Refuge

    Event Date: 02 Sep 2010
Author: RobertParker
Subject: Sanctuary Cities & Bible Cities of Refuge
Posted: 02 Sep 2010 at 8:04am

America has several Sanctuary Cities which provide a haven for illegal migrants. The concept of Sanctuary Cities is not evil in itself; it is the misuse of them that is evil. If they were operated on the same principle as is Christmas Island off the coast of Australia, they could be a good thing. It may be illegal in the eyes of the Law for migrants to enter our countries without a permit; but the question we need to ask ourselves is this: is it illegal according to GOD'S Law of love and mercy? The world belongs to God and He has the last say.

Many illegal migrants flee terrible conditions in their own country, and are only illegal because they are forced to be so by circumstances. Australia deals with these people in a relatively humane manner. Before being allowed to join the general populace of Australia, they are taken to Christmas Island Camp where, in due time, they are examined and processed. If they are found to have valid reasons for entering our territory, they are permitted to STAY in the general community of Australia. Isn't that a merciful and fair way to deal with these people? They are allowed to STAY in this "city of refuge" permanently.

Is it wrong, as some have maintained, to refer to the BIBLE Cities of Refuge as an example of the mercy that we should extend to those fleeing their circumstances? People like the Muslims? Some claim that there are no comparisons between the idea of Sanctuary Cities and the Bible Cities of Refuge. They say that the Bible refuges were only for Israel's accidental murderers; but is that strictly true? We will examine some of the Spirit of Prophecy statements before stating our conclusions. Ellen White, in her description of the destruction of Jerusalem as revealed in Matthew 24, makes this observation:

<span ="text" field="text">Jesus did not answer His disciples by taking up separately the destruction of Jerusalem, and the last great day of His coming. The city of Jerusalem represented the world, and the utterances regarding its destruction are to be connected with the world's more terrible destruction. In speaking of Jerusalem, His prophetic words reached beyond that event to the conflagration that will take place in that day when the Lord shall rise "out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the ear<span ="text" field="text">th for their iniquity." The description of the two events is mingled, and the entire subject is a warning to those who shall live in the last scenes of earth's history. <span ="pc" field="pc">{ST, <span ="date" field="date"><span ="year" field="year"><span ="IndexAll" field="Index All">February 20, 1901<span ="IndexNone" field="Index None"><span ="pr" field="pr"> par. 2}

Jerusalem was the holy city of Israel, and yet it represented the world in the application of events and the way God deals with them. The same is true of the Cities of Refuge. Let us turn to Patriarchs and Prophets page 515:

<span ="text" field="text"> The cities of refuge were so distributed as to be within a half day's journey of every part of the land. The roads leading to them were always to be kept in good repair; all along the way signposts were to be erected bearing the word "Refuge" in plain, bold characters, that the fleeing one might not be delayed for a moment. Any person--Hebrew, stranger, or sojourner--might avail himself of this provision. But while the guiltless were not to be rashly slain, neither were the guilty to escape punishment. The case of the fugitive was to be fairly tried by the proper authorities, and only when found innocent of intentional murder was he to be protected in the city of refuge. The guilty were given up to the avenger. And those who were entitled to protection could receive it only on condition of remaining within the appointed refuge. Should one wander away beyond the prescribed limits, and be found by the avenger of blood, his life would pay the penalty of his disregard of the Lord's provision. At the death of the high priest, however, all who had sought shelter in the cities of refuge were at liberty to return to their possessions.  <span ="bc" field="bc">{PP 515.<span ="pr" field="pr">3}

Christ died for ALL and that means that He, the City of Refuge, was not open only to the accidental murderer. A murderer in this case is symbolic of all sinners as we have put Christ to death. We are reminded of Paul's words:"

(1Co 11:27)
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

Partaking of bread and wine unworthily is akin to fleeing to the City of Refuge unworthily and therefore we will be deported. It is taking Christ's name in vain if we profess Him and are still guilty of living in our sins.

Robert

SDA Church Concerns : Sabbath School Classes

    Event Date: 05 Sep 2010
Author: RobertParker
Subject: Sabbath School Classes
Posted: 05 Sep 2010 at 5:05am

I stood alone in my Sabbath School class again yesterday and it is very upsetting. It was stated by the teacher, and those members who spoke, that the lessons on Romans has nothing to do with the Law but that it was all about Grace. They said that I should not focus on the Law but on Grace. I answered that we cannot understand Grace until we first know why we need Grace, and what Grace does for us. I maintained that the lessons are ALL about the Law, and the issue was HOW that Law can be obeyed.

Did Jesus minimize the Law so that He could emphasize Grace? Here is the answer:

(Isa 42:21) The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

How did He do that? By His expanded teaching of the true extent of the Law; and by the life He lived. He was the very embodiment of the Law.

It is our responsibility to copy the Pattern and to magnify the Law after Him. We too, are to preach and live the magnified Law. How do we do that? By having Christ enshrined on the tables of our hearts and minds. Jesus must be formed within us if we are to obey the Law perfectly. Thus, Romans 8 is God's answer to the dilemma of Romans 7.

Robert
